Sticky Rice Cooker Reviews - FAQ and Questions
- Can someone help me find the right (sticky) rice cooker?
I have a friend who's been telling me she wants a rice cooker or a rice converter (?) for Christmas. Her stepmom is Asian and she makes that sticky rice using a rice cooker of some sort. My friend wants to make this at home, but I don't know what to get (I don't know the dad or the stepmom, so I can't ask them.) Can someone tell me what I need to buy? Please, Please?? I think the stepmom is Thai if that helps.
A i know the rice you are talking about. It is done mostly in a bamboo basket because it can't stay submerged in water. It is a deep woven basket, that sets inside an hour shaped pot. Then it is steamed for a while. Then you air it out, and put in into a separate bamboo basket with a top..You can go to a this store and ask them. Maybe they have some knew off the bottom ones. But look to pay around $100+ for a cooker it's not cheap...or you could just get her the original Bamboo Steam baskets.

- How do you make sticky rice in rice cooker instead of steaming?
I really want to make sticky rice the kind that Thai restaurants make. Can I use a regular rice cooker to cook sticky rice? Most people say I need to use a rice steaming basket. If I can use a regular rice cooker to cook sticky rice what do I need to do? By the way the rice cookers brand name that i have Sanyo, if that makes a difference. I know how to cook regular rice (long grain) with the rice cooker and stove top. But can I do the same way I cook regular rice (long grain) with sticky rice (short grain)?
A Thai sticky rice (also known as "sweet rice" or "glutinous rice") is a tasty, sweet rice that does a great job of filling the stomach--but be careful not to eat too much... According to Thai tradition sticky rice can put you fast asleep if more than a couple handfuls are eaten. It is meant to be formed into small balls that you make with your fingers. Then dip it in spicy sauce and let it soak up like a sponge. Note that Thai sticky is a particular variety of sweet rice, and you must not substitute other varieties with this method you can use Thai jasmine rice. Method: Rinse rice 2-3 times, until water runs clear. Place rinsed rice in a bowl and fill with cool water so the water is approximately 2-3 inches above the rice (see Step 1). Let the rice stand in water for 6-8 hours. Drain the rice, place it in a cheesecloth, wrap it up and put the cheesecloth inside bamboo steamer. Put 6-8 cups of water in sticky rice steamer. Then place bamboo steamer inside sticky rice steamer (see step 2). Be sure the bottom of the bamboo steamer does not touch the boiling water. Place a standard 8 inch lid loosely over the top of the bamboo steamer (see Step 3). Now turn on the heat (Med/High) and steam the rice for 45 minutes (or until tender). Enjoy!
